Old St. Patrick’s is known for its joyful musical liturgies and concert choirs. We have a choir for you or an opportunity for you to join us on your musical instrument on Sunday mornings, or Sunday afternoon. If weekends too are busy for you, we have a number of choirs that rehearse for only 2 – 3 months at a time and sing for special occasions. Please see below for the various music ministry opportunities.

Sunday worship at Old St. Patrick’s is blessed with a very talented and dedicated group of singers and musicians who lead us in song prayer. We are truly blessed by their ministry. We have choirs and instruments at the 8 a.m., 9:30 a.m., 11:15 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. Masses under the direction of Bill Fraher. We invite you to be a part of one or more of those groups.
If you would like to be part of our 5 p.m. Music Ministry group, please contact Laura Higgins at laurah@oldstpats.org, or 708.606.8498.
Singers from our Children’s Choir and Teen Ensemble lead us on one Sunday a month at the 9:30 a.m. Mass. The Teen Ensemble ministers on the first Sunday at our teen-hosted Liturgy. The Children’s Choir ministers on the third Sunday at our Family Masses. If you would like more information about these groups, please contact Dominic Trumfio at dominict@oldstpats.org
The Music Ministry creates numerous opportunities throughout the year for you to become involved. Based on your time commitment, you may wish to volunteer for our weekly Sunday Choir, or perhaps consider one of our seasonal choirs such as Deck The Hall. We will be glad to work with you to accommodate your busy schedule. For further information about the various choirs and instrumental groups, please contact Bill Fraher at billf@oldstpats.org, or 312.831.9353.

In 1992, Marin Alsop, the conductor of the Baltimore Symphony, commissioned two New York jazz musicians Gary Anderson and Bob Christiansen to create a jazz, gospel, blues, funk, and classical recreation of Handel’s oratorio “The Messiah.” The result was, while still maintaining Handel’s original intent, a swinging performance of “Too Hot To Handel.” It has since been performed in many cities throughout the United States and most recently has been brought to Chicago audiences by the Auditorium Theatre at Roosevelt University.
Tenor Rodrick Dixon, alto Karen Marie Richardson, and soprano Alfreda Burke are the soloists along with a jazz ensemble, full orchestra and a 125-voice Too Hot Choir. The choir is under the direction of Bill Fraher and is composed of volunteers from the Chicago metropolitan area. Auditions and rehearsals usually begin in September; the concert is schedule in January around the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday. No need to prepare anything for the audition. As the choir learns 14 choruses in 12 rehearsals, participation in all rehearsals is necessary.

Old St. Patrick’s Music Ministry offers three wedding music fairs a year on the first Monday of February, May, and October from 7 – 8:45 p.m. at Old St. Patrick’s Church. Check the online calendar for specific dates at http://oldstpats.org/events/. Brides, grooms and extended family hear all kinds of music appropriate for a wedding performed by many instrumentalists and singers. The program features strings, piano, trumpet, oboe, Irish trad players, and six to eight singers. Instrumentalists such as bagpipers and flutists also are available. There is a $5 donation per person at the door.
Whether you are a bride or groom planning a wedding at Old St. Pat’s or elsewhere; or a mother or father planning your son or daughter’s wedding or your own wedding anniversary; or if you want to hear some good music, please join us for our next wedding music fair for what some people call “the cheapest and best concert on a Monday night in downtown Chicago.”
