A collaboration between the people of Old St. Patrick’s Church and those who live in and work on behalf of the North Lawndale Community of Chicago’s west side.
Cultivating mutually beneficial relationships… Growth… Communion… Mutual transformation of all. We also engage in this out of a mandate of our baptism in Christ. “Go therefore into all nations . . . (Matthew 28:19-20)”
All are welcome to volunteer, and the benefits are for all. In these early stages, the majority of the opportunities are for adults. Later in the year, there will also be well-structured opportunities for children and teens.
A leadership team comprised of representatives of the communities of North Lawndale and Old St. Pat’s Church meets monthly to envision, plan and direct the initiative.
This is Assets Based Community Development. This means we, as a community, invest our human, material, spiritual and financial gifts in organizations that are already doing good, important and successful work in North Lawndale. Following the lead of these organizations, we serve the community to enrich it while it simultaneously also enriches ours. It is a partnership that enables us to grow together as Chicago Metropolitan neighbors and God’s people.
Initially, all you need is the time, interest and ability to be involved. Additionally, every participant over the age of 18 is required to undergo the Virtus Training for safe environments for children offered by the Archdiocese of Chicago. For Virtus Training details, visit:

3. Firehouse Community Arts Center
Lawndale Community Church
3827 W. Ogden Ave.
Chicago, Illinois 60623
Pastor Phil Jackson, Executive Director
Once home to the Chicago Fire Department’s Engine 38, the House Covenant Church and Lawndale Christian Community Church have reclaimed the facility as a state of the art community center to help rescue a generation of youngsters. The mission is to engage students from North Lawndale and Little Village, to build strong relationships with them and to help them discover their gifts. The center is an outgrowth of Pastor Phil Jackson’s “hip-hop” church services which attract hundreds of teens each month. Due to open in early 2014, the center will offer a safe place to socialize, web design, graphic arts and video editing so the youth will be active and more marketable whether they go off to college or desire certifications to actually go out and start working. The facility will contain a well-equipped kitchen to teach culinary arts, a dance studio, a graphic arts center and photo lab and a music recording studio. The visionary organizers deem the $700,000 price tag to finish the building’s renovations and hire staff to be “worth it” to achieve the dream.
