The House of Mary and Joseph Shelter is located at 2715 W. Harrison, Chicago. This is the only Chicago homeless shelter for men and women that is open 365 days a year. It provides shelter, food, showers and other services for 290 men and 37 women every night of the year.
This shelter is in need of the following new or gently used bed linens.
- Twin-size bed sheets;
- Pillow Cases;
- Pillows;
- Twin-size blankets.
We invite you, together with your family, to collect the linens needed and join S.P.O.K.E.S. on a field trip to this blessed shelter on Sunday, November 7. This is a family field trip and children of all ages are welcome.
You may participate in two ways:
- Donate the above-mentioned linens (either new or gently used) and bring the items to the FXW lobby on Sunday, November 7 between 9:15 and 11:45 a.m.
- You also may travel by bus to the shelter. The bus will leave Old St. Pat’s at noon and return by 2 p.m. on Sunday, November 7. Upon arrival at the shelter, families will help deliver the items, make the beds with the items donated, and tour the facilities.
This field trip to the shelter provides the opportunity to learn first hand about homelessness right in your hometown. If you are planning to participate, please ask your child/children to write a little note of blessing to the person who will be sleeping in the bed that night at the shelter.
As lunch will NOT be served on this field trip, please bring a bag lunch for your family to eat on the bus ride to the shelter.
As buses will be rented for this field trip, please R.S.V.P. to Kate Nolan at katenolan66@yahoo.com, or 708.829.1752 by Friday, November 5.
We are grateful for whatever items or time you can donate to this project. We look forward to sharing this important trip with you.
