Save the Date
Hope Sunday ~ May 18, 2008

When the day of Pentecost came it found
them gathered in one room.
(Acts 2:1)

We rise to the hope that church can be born again …and again…and again, but not without each other. We invite ALL members, friends, and guests of Old St. Patrick’s Church to join us at 10 a.m. on May 18, 2008, the first Sunday following Pentecost Day, for a special spirit-filled and bold celebration of the Eucharist at the UIC Forum.

We yearn to celebrate with you a Pentecost Moment in the life of Old St. Patrick’s.

All were filled with the Holy Spirit. They began to express themselves in foreign tongues and make bold proclamations as the Spirit prompted them. (Acts 2:4)

LIFT (Leading India’s Future Today) USA invites you to participate in fostering global youth leadership by supporting our inaugural Lift a Glass! wine tasting and auction, on Friday, Nov. 9 in the church hall, Old St. Patrick’s.

LIFT is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the development of leadership excellence within the young people of Tamil Nadu, India, regardless of background, caste, or religious tradition. LIFT strives to raise the aspirations and leadership skills of underprivileged children so they can transform society by combating poverty, unemployment, and poor health.

The Wine Auction will begin at 5:30 p.m.with hors d’oeuvres, wine tasting, and silent auction preview. At 6 p.m., the silent auction will begin, offering a variety of unique gifts, experiences, and travel packages, in addition to notable wines and spirits. Throughout the evening, you will have the opportunity to taste wines of both national and international varietals while learning from wine experts at each of the tasting stations.

Bring your friends and join many of Chicago’s civic and community leaders for a social evening with profound social benefit. The proceeds of our 2007 event will fund scholarships to LIFT’s unique network of primary and secondary schools that offer leadership training to motivated children, so they can become examples to their community and agents of essential change. We also plan to allocate a portion of our proceeds to The Vineyard Home for Mentally Challenged Adults in Purgitsville, West Virginia, cofounded by Father Daniel M. Cantwell, a Chicago priest who was very dear to many of us in the Old St. Patrick’s community.

Tickets are $35 in advance, per person, and can be purchased by calling Betty O’Toole at 312.798.2366. Attendance is limited to the first 300 guests, so please make your reservations now!

We are also actively soliciting tax-deductible donations of wine and other silent auction prizes. If you would like to support Lift a Glass! in this manner, please contact Kate Boege at 312.337.7953. Even a single bottle of quality wine or spirits would be greatly appreciated and would help us achieve our substantial fundraising goals.

Finally, we are seeking 50 motivated volunteers to assist us at the Wine Auction on Friday, Nov. 9. Please contact Kate Boege if you would like to support LIFT by rolling up your sleeves and helping us host the event. We’d love to work with you!

We hope to see you on Friday, Nov. 9 when we will Lift a Glass!

Old St. Patrick’s Church is honored to have these outstanding preachers join us for our Lenten Mission:

March 7
Prayer: The Spiritual Practice of Intimacy
Rev. Pat McGrath, S.J.

Father McGrath is a Jesuit of the Chicago Province. He is a dynamic retreat leader, presenter, who focuses on the practical living of Catholic faith. Fr. McGrath uses storytelling, scripture, wisdom from the Catholic tradition, and the spirituality of St. Ignatius of Loyola to help audiences reflect and experience God in all things.

Fr. McGrath serves as the provincial assistant for Secondary Education for the Chicago Province of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). On weekends, Fr. McGrath presides at Old St. Patrick’s Church in Chicago. He holds a B.A. from Notre Dame, a M. Div. from the Jesuit School of Theology, and a M.S. from Northwestern University.

March 14
Fasting: The Spiritual Practice of Risk
Mr. Terry Nelson-Johnson, D. Min.

Dr. Terry Nelson-Johnson. is a storyteller at heart. Convinced God is an experience and not merely an idea, he strains to facilitate felt encounters with the Living God through story, video, poetry, and humor. Through his work, Dr. Nelson-Johnson implores and challenges us to enter more deeply into the mystery of grace, the mystery of spirit, the mystery of God.

Dr. Nelson-Johnson served on the faculty of the Loyola Academy Jesuit High School for eighteen years. He is currently the director of Faith Formation at Old St. Patrick’s Church. He also leads retreats and workshops throughout the country.

Dr. Nelson-Johnson holds a master’s degree from the Institute of Pastoral Studies, Loyola University; and a Doctorate of Ministry degree from the University of St. Mary of the Lake. Dr. Nelson-Johnson and his wife Holly are the parents of two children, Ian and Clare.

March 21
Almsgiving: The Spiritual Practice of Justice
Rev. Lillian Daniel

Rev. Daniel became the senior minister of First Congregational Church of Glen Ellyn in the summer of 2004. A graduate of Bryn Mawr College and Yale Divinity School, Rev. Daniel was ordained into the Christian ministry in 1993, to the position of associate minister of the First Congregational Church in Cheshire, Connecticut. In 1996, she became the senior minister of the Church of the Redeemer, United Church of Christ, in New Haven, Connecticut, where she remained for eight years, earning her Doctorate of Ministry from Hartford Seminary in 2004.

Rev. Daniel has taught preaching to seminarians at Yale Divinity School, and Chicago Theological Seminary. A frequent contributor to the Christian Century Magazine, she also writes for preaching periodicals such as the Journal for Preachers and the Biblical Preaching Journal, and also has a regular spirituality column in the denominational newspaper, the United Church News. Rev. Daniel is the author of Tell It Like It Is: Reclaiming the Practice of Testimony, published by the Alban Institute in 2005.

Married to Lou Weeks, a labor union organizer, Rev. Daniel is the proud mother of two school-age children, Calvin and Abigail Weeks, and the not-so-proud owner of two badly behaved dogs, Jake and Lucky.

March 28
Reconciliation: The Spiritual Practice of Living the Truth
Rev. Paul Novak

This evening will also include an opportunity to celebrate the sacrament of reconciliation.
Father Paul Novak, O.S.M.

Father Paul Novak was ordained a Servite priest on May 26, 1990 at Our Lady of Sorrows Basilica in Chicago. From 1990 to 1992, he served as associate pastor at St. Domitilla Church in Hillside. Fr. Novak was the vocation director for the Order of Friar Servants of Mary (Servites) from 1992 to 1994. In the fall of 1994, Fr. Novak joined the faculty of De La Salle Institute as the campus minister and religion teacher, and served there until 2003. Fr. Novak has served as assistant provincial and was recently elected provincial for the Servite Friars. He regularly presides at weekday and Sunday Liturgies at Old St. Patrick’s Church in Chicago.

We invite you to make the Lenten Mission part of your own observance of Lent and preparation for Easter. We would be honored by your choice to be with us this year at our Lenten Mission.

… deepening our understanding of the Gospels through study and dialogue …

WHAT IS SUNDAY SCRIPTURE STUDY?

Sunday Scripture Study invites you to gather together with other people at Old St. Pat’s for the purpose of deepening our understanding of the spiritual wisdom available to us in the Gospels through a process of study and dialogue. Our focus will be on the Sunday Gospels for Lent.

WHY STUDY IN A GROUP?

Together with Christians throughout history we believe that the wisdom of the Gospels is most effectively broken open through dialogue with each other, allowing us to be resources to each other. Sunday Scripture Study invites us to re-discover one of the earliest practices of Christian communities, i.e., re-telling and reflecting on the stories of Jesus.

WHAT HAPPENS AT A TYPICAL GATHERING OF SUNDAY SCRIPTURE STUDY?

The format is simple. The Gospel passage is read aloud. There is a little time for silent reflection. This is followed by a focusing presentation. We then engage in conversation about the passage.

IS THERE A TEXTBOOK FOR THIS SERIES?

No, copies of the Gospel texts will be provided (and that is all that is necessary), but feel free to bring your own Bible. We will rely heavily on Jack Shea’s most recent book, The Relentless Widow: The Spiritual Wisdom of the Gospels for Christian Preachers and Teachers. This excellent resource is available for purchase online as well as at many local bookstores but is not required for participation in the program.

WHO IS FACILLITATING THE SESSIONS?

Bob Kolatorowicz from our staff at Old St. Pat’s will facilitate each session.

HOW MANY SESSIONS ARE SCHEDULED?

There are four Sunday sessions scheduled for this series. They will take place on March 4, 11, 18, & 25.

HOW LONG DOES EACH SESSION LAST?

Each session is 55 minutes long. We begin at 10:00 am and end promptly at 10:55 am to allow plenty of time for people planning to attend the 11:15 am Mass to arrive at the church. While we begin the program at 10:00 am, we will offer “coffee and” beginning at 9:30 am. All are welcome, and we hope this might be helpful to those who are attending the 8:15 am Mass and would like to participate in the series.

WHERE DOES SUNDAY SCRIPTURE STUDY TAKE PLACE?

We will meet on the 2nd floor of the Mission Center (711 W. Monroe).

WHAT IF I CAN’T MAKE ALL FOUR SESSIONS?

Our hope is that you can participate in all four sessions. Of course, we realize that not every one may be able to commit to the entire series. Please know that you are welcome to join us whenever you are able.

WHAT HAPPENS AT THE END OF THE FOUR WEEKS?

The program ends with the last meeting. If some people would like to continue beyond the five weeks, the facilitator will have information about some possible options.

IS THERE A PROGRAM FEE AND HOW DO I REGISTER?

This program is supported by your generous stewardship of Old St. Pat’s. There is no program fee. To help us best prepare, please call 312.648.1021 by Thursday, March 1, 2007 to let us know if you are planning on attending the first session. Thank you.
