Pancake

A pancake is a thin, flat, round cake prepared from a batter, and cooked on a hot griddle or frying pan. Most pancakes are quick breads; some use a yeast-raised or fermented batter. Most pancakes are cooked one side on a griddle and flipped partway through to cook the other side. Depending on the region, pancakes may be served at any time, with a variety of toppings or fillings including jam, chocolate chips, fruit, syrup or meat.

The Middle English word Pancake appears in an English culinary manuscript from 1430.[2][3]

History
In Canada,[33] the United Kingdom,[34] Ireland,[35] New Zealand, and Australia,[36] pancakes are traditionally eaten on Shrove Tuesday, which is also known as “Pancake Day” and, particularly in Ireland, as “Pancake Tuesday”. (Shrove Tuesday is better known in the United States, France and other countries as Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday.) Historically, pancakes were made on Shrove Tuesday so that the last of the fatty and rich foods could be used up.

Regional Varieties
Old St. Pat’s
The pancake has been turned into an annual event in Chicago at Old St. Pat’s, where Foundations Youth Ministry holds their yearly Pancake Breakfast. In 2012, this 7^th annual fundraiser was held on January 29^th to raise money that will help fund this summer’s Worktours to Georgia, Minnesota and New York.  This year, over 1000 people were hosted by close to 200 volunteers.

Support
The Foundations Pancake Breakfast is a community and family affair all supported by local businesses, individual volunteers, extended family and, not to be forgotten, those that generously contribute to consuming the pancakes and entering the raffles.

We are pleased to announce that this year’s event raised $16,000 in support of our summer adventures.  THANK YOU, Old St. Pat’s community!
